ON THIS PLANT

Agave toumeyana is a species of succulent plant belonging to the Agavaceae family. Native to the southwestern United States, particularly Arizona and New Mexico, this plant thrives in rocky or sandy soils and can withstand extreme temperatures, making it well-suited for harsh environments.

This succulent features a rosette of thick, fleshy leaves that are either blue-green or gray-green. The leaves grow symmetrically around the center of the rosette, each adorned with sharp spines along their edges. They can reach up to 2 feet in length and 6 inches in width.

Agave toumeyana is notable for its tall flower stalks, which can grow up to 15 feet high and bear clusters of yellow flowers at their tips. After flowering, the plant typically dies back but produces offsets or "pups" around its base, which will grow into new plants.

Historically, various Native American tribes have used Agave toumeyana for food, medicine, fiber for weaving baskets and clothing, and in religious ceremonies.

Overall, this unique succulent is a valuable addition to any garden. Its hardiness and striking blue-green foliage make it particularly attractive for xeriscaping projects, where water conservation is prioritized.

A note from PlantMom

Toumey's century plant has moderate disease resistance but is more vulnerable to high humidity and overwatering. It also becomes more prone to disease if it receives insufficient light and is overwatered. Regarding care, Toumey's century plant is drought tolerant and can go for extended periods without watering. It needs little fertilizer and only occasional pruning. That makes it suitable for people at any experience level, especially those who prefer to spend less time on plant care or who may occasionally be away from home for long periods. It is a good option for those who do not want to invest a lot of time in caring for their plants but still want an easy-to-maintain plant.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Agave Toumeyana.

Temperature

Toumey's century plant performs best in warm conditions and needs relatively high temperatures during the growing season to support growth and metabolic activity. It prefers abundant sunlight, proper moisture, and good air circulation. However, it can be damaged by very low temperatures and by overwatering. It's important to maintain a balance and to avoid both excessively high heat and overly dry conditions.

Fertilizer

Toumey's century plant only requires light fertilizer applications once or twice a year during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter or summer when it is dormant. Cut back on fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before feeding. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and encourages blooms.
